This course will cover the basics of strangulation for EMS providers who may be the first responders on scene for domestic violence calls. It’s crucial that providers recognize the sign and symptoms of strangulation that are often minimized or go unnoticed. Many prosecutors are using EMS providers’ reports to assist in pursuing maximum sentences for perpetrators. Our Forensic Nurse will share helpful suggestions for patient assessment and documentation of strangulation related injuries.

Students should bring a stethoscope to class!

The stethoscope was invented in 1816. It's the symbol of the medical professional. It's used as a patient assessment tool for blood pressures, breath sounds, heart tones and more. But newer technologies such as NIBP and Capnography are being used. Heart tones are rarely taught or appreciated. So, is the stethoscope still relevant? Recent introduction of digital stethoscopes come with the ability to record and produce waveforms called phonocardiography. Leave to state educator and stethoscopy instructor Bob Page to be all over it. Come and learn about this new technology!

NAEMT’s Geriatric Education for EMS course prepares prehospital practitioners to respond to, assess, and care for this fast-growing patient population. This third edition of the course strengthens and enhances practitioners’ ability to provide the best care for older adults in every community.

The GEMS course helps EMS practitioners learn to conduct a comprehensive assessment of geriatric patients. Because the aging process affects all body systems, NAEMT’s course provides an overview of changes that occur as people age and describes how those changes can impact patient presentation. Incorporation of the GEMS Diamond (Geriatric, Environmental, Medical, and Social assessments) can help practitioners formulate a holistic diagnostic and treatment approach.

The third edition of GEMS addresses the following topics:

  • Changes with age and assessment of the older patient
  • Polypharmacy and Toxicity in Older Patients
  • Respiratory Emergencies
  • Cardiovascular Emergencies
  • Trauma
  • Other Medical Disorders
  • Neurologic Emergencies
  • Elder Maltreatment and Psychosocial Emergencies
  • End-of-Life and Palliative Care
  • Disaster Triage and Transporting Older Patients
  • Left Ventricular Assist Devices
  • Skin Disorders
  • Ventilators
  • Urinary Catheter and Colostomy Bag Care
  • Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators

The 8-hour course is appropriate for EMTs, paramedics, emergency medical responders, nurses, physician assistants and physicians. GEMS is accredited by CAPCE and recognized by NREMT.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) continues to rank as one of the most stressful jobs in the United States (Bennett, 2004; Dow, 2019). Vicarious trauma is defined as the emotional residue of exposure to traumatic stories and experiences of others through the healthcare response; witnessing fear, pain, and terror that others have experienced; a pre-occupation with horrific stories told to the professional (American Counseling Association, 2016). This training will address stigma surrounding vicarious trauma, skill building to help support the EMS professional, and how to advocate for systems change.

Learning

Objectives:

1.      Participants will understand the stigma around the impact

of vicarious trauma on the EMS Professional and other healthcare

providers.

2.      Participants will learn activities to do to reduce the

impact of vicarious trauma and resources to access in the community.

3.      Participants will learn how to lead discussions within

their organizations to create change.

After the suicide of a close firefighter brother just 17 days after meeting me for lunch I decided to start a business to help those first responders and their families who may be suffering in silence due to the stigma. Operation Yellow Tape assist with motivation, next steps, community and stressing that telling your own story of struggle could very well become someone’s survival guide. I teach an acronym called HELP. Health, Educate, Launch and People. Operation Yellow Tape knows the struggles inside the yellow tape are difficult but also those struggles outside the yellow tape have to be addressed and hit head on if needed. Taking care of yourself mentally and emotionally during this 20-25 year journey is an absolute must. My speaking covers my own story of struggle, what I did and in my opinion why it helps us and our families if followed.

EMS providers a primarily taught subjective assessment techniques for patient with respiratory problems. This includes basic observation of signs and symptoms that can often be confusing and misleading. Then providers are asked to interview patients for OPQRST-SAMPLE when they are having a hard enough time just breathing. Add to the fact that most protocols are written having therapy based on chief complaints and sometimes without sound clinical judgement. Studies have suggested this approach can be dangerous. Technological advancements have produced respiratory monitors that are much smaller in size and a fraction of the cost of our high end monitor/defibrillator with Pulse Ox and Capnography. In this presentation, Bob introduces the audience to the concepts of the big three of respiratory monitoring: Pulse oximetry, capnography, and Co-Oximetry (CO monitoring), describing their use as objective patient assessment tools, and discusses through case reviews, the impact they can have on clinical decision making for all levels of providers.

History has proven that “Rescues by Committee” do not work well. Whether you are a two-person crew on a medic unit or working on the scene of a Mass Casualty Incident, there needs to be effective leadership to ensure safety of all responders and a successful outcome of the incident. Every responder, no matter their tenure can be a force multiplier who contributes to the successful outcome. Captain Jerry Pruden will present the positive characteristics of a good team member and leader utilizing wisdom found on social media.
